Interviews
Guided by your teacher advisor, VHP’s interview packet and instructional videos, you have the opportunity to learn history, from WWII to recent conflicts, first-hand from a veteran. Over the course of the fall semester, chapter students conduct and video record veteran interviews, perform related historical research as needed, and write and edit veteran's stories in preparation for publication.

Publishing
From December to February, high school chapters have the ability to learn and utilize Adobe InDesign and Photoshop software to lay out their stories for publication. Middle school chapters submit their essays to a lead Publishing Chapter who will complete and assemble all elements to publish a regional edition of our hardbound book, Since You Asked™ (SYA). You become a published author!

Book Reception
Collaborating groups of chapters, through the leadership of the Publishing Chapter, work together to organize a Community Reception & Book Signing event, typically held in April or May, with a keynote speaker to honor their veteran partners and present the completed SYA book for signing and distribution. Participating students and veterans each receive a free book.

Archiving
Preserving your veteran’s story in America’s national library further honors your veteran. In addition, future generations can listen to the story and learn from the lessons you were able to hear first-hand. Sometime chapters plan a trip to Washington DC to personally deliver their veteran archives to Veterans History Project. They welcome visits and will give you a tour of their office!

Civic Engagement
Participating in civic events enriches the connection with veterans in your community. Students celebrate Veterans Day & Memorial Day through parades and other VHP planned events, as well as engage in opportunities to connect with local veteran and service groups, plan school assemblies with veteran speakers, or explore field trips to historical sites.

Chapter Training

Chapter Support

VHP supports chapters with training events, instruction manuals, video tutorials, on-site mentoring visits, outreach materials, veteran and civic group connections, technology tools, reception materials and more.  

Volunteers are also available to assist teachers based on the need of the chapter, and provide editing support as students finalize their veteran stories.

Chapter Costs

Participation in the program results in students publishing veterans' stories; therefore, we ask Chapters to help support these costs, approximately $200 per published story.

Fortunately, VHP is a character education program and an extracurricular activity, which allows schools to raise funds through Arizona Tax Credits to support student participation.
