Independent Contributor Program

Students interview U.S. military veterans who share first-person history, life experiences, and lessons of character, leadership, and perseverance.

  • Record the oral history interview for preservation in the Llbrary of Congress.
  • Write the veteran's service story for publication in VHP's hardbound book, Since You Asked™.
  • Honor your veteran and be recognized for your work at our annual community book-signing event in Arizona.

    Participation Fee
    A $200 fee supports the publication of the veterans story.  Each veteran and author receive a free copy of Since You Asked.

    Independent Contributor Guide
    Our Independent Contributor Guide directs participants step-by-step through conducting an oral history interview; writing, editing, and publishing their veteran's service story in Since You Asked, and preserving the recorded interview in the Library of Congress.  Video tutorials, interview questions, and writing worksheets are some of the supportive curriculum materials. 
    Two Ways to Participate
    1) Work independently, with the opportunity to have VHP Program Staff and Editorial Committee review your writing and provide feedback.

    2) Set up a private course for your group of contributors (minimum of three participants) and track everyone's progress with moderator access.

    The technology platform is intuitive and provides an interactive experience which allows for self-guided progress, with automated milestone deadlines. The web-based LMS is compatible with the two most recent versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox, and can be used on a laptop, desktop, or mobile device.  Compliant with FERPA, COPPA and other applicable privacy regulations.
